  • Our Approach

    Hybrid cloud, software-defined data center

Etisalat Misr’s Khalid Al Mansouri, CIO, Khalid AlKaf, IT Infrastructure and Operations Director, and Samer Roshdi, IT Infrastructure Operation Line Manager evaluated services and solutions from multiple vendors and selected EMC as its IT transformation partner. EMC’s Amr AloTaleb, Senior Account Manager, and Walid Yehia, CSD offered a federation of solutions to simplify and speed the transition to a hybrid cloud architecture and ITaaS and built a proof-of-concept cloud so the Etisalat IT staff could see how the technologies worked.

Once engaged, EMC interviewed business and IT stakeholders and applied its Cloud Advisory Service methodology and proprietary platform to analyze workloads to help determine cloud application placement and define the right cloud architecture to deliver ITaaS. The consultants documented requirements, assessed readiness for service automation, performed gap analyses, proposed a phased approach, and developed the business case and a step-by-step implementation roadmap.

EMC consultants leveraged Etisalat’s existing VMware and EMC assets in the Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud reference architecture, enabling fast deployment. Etisalat Misr IT was already familiar with core components of the architecture, such as VMware vSphere and EMC storage, and got hands-on experience with new cloud tools, such as EMC ViPR Controller and VMware vCloud Automation Center (vCAC) via the proof-of-concept cloud.

Etisalat Misr achieved complete transformation to private cloud and automation of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Storage as a Service (STaaS) on-schedule using EMC ViPR, the VMware vCloud Suite, and Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud self-service portal. EMC also integrated the cloud and services with nine different existing Etisalat systems.

Etisalat Misr and EMC are now working on Phase 2, migrating the hybrid cloud to a VCE Vblock converged infrastructure, simplifying security compliance with RSA, expanding the self-service catalog, and leveraging additional automation. The Phase 3 Platform as a Service (PaaS) initiative will leverage EMC Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

    • “Software-defined enterprise technologies enable us to compete effectively in a fast-changing market. EMC provided Etisalat with a much needed fast-track approach to hybrid cloud and Infrastructure and Storage as a Service (IaaS and STaaS), positioning us for the Third Platform, big data, and monetizing our data. EMC, with its IT and modern data center experience, technologies, application profiling, and phased methodologies, has helped us to put software-defined concepts to work for business advantage.”

Khalid Al Mansouri, CIO, Etisalat Misr

  • Outcomes

enabled innovation, sped time to market

With EMC solutions, provisioning VMs and storage is fast and fully automated. Etisalat has reduced the time it takes to provision both physical and virtual servers, providing business agility. The self-service portal enables IT to spend less time on user support and more time on innovation.

reduced IT costs and physical footprint

Transformation to hybrid cloud with IaaS and STaaS has enabled Etisalat to reduce its physical footprint and cut IT costs significantly. The company reduced CAPEX and OPEX and improved cash flow by shifting from fixed costs to a variable, pay-as-needed model.

    improved storage utilization

ViPR automatically optimizes utilization by non-disruptively moving application data to physical arrays in the storage pool that match required attributes—formerly a manual, time-consuming task. Etisalat can bring in new storage or migrate data between arrays or tiers without downtime.
