Beginning its transformation journey
Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, treats 1.1 million patients each year, with approximately half of these patients being international visitors from over 190 countries around the world. With 580 patient beds, 1,300 doctors, and 1,000 registered nurses, the hospital aims to deliver the highest levels of care to its patients. Bumrungrad International Hospital differentiates itself as a hospital in two core ways: quality of medical care; and the convenience and speed of accessing those services.
The hospital recognizes that technology is advancing at an exponential rate – changing the way individuals work and live, as well as bringing new industries to life, while reshaping others that have existed for decades – healthcare included. Therefore, Bumrungrad Hospital has embraced a culture of continuous transformation across the organization including its underlying technology infrastructure. In fact, technology underpins the entire patient care cycle, from booking appointments online or via the mobile application, to post-hospitalization care as an essential element of treatment.
With over three million tests done each year, amounting to nearly 10,000 tests per day the hospital needs the capabilities to process huge volumes of data and present personalized information and recommendations directly to the patient. In turn, healthcare experts rely on real-time information to deliver the best patient care, which means systems must be available at all times. In meeting these challenges, it became clear that moving to a single, converged platform would help Bumrungrad International Hospital simplify administration, coordinate and manage patient data, and speed information delivery to clinicians, doctors, and patients.
Embracing the digital future of healthcare
Prior to implementing the converged platform, Bumrungrad International Hospital was focused on tactical, short-term, and component-based procurement. This led to limitations in effectively delivering to the demands of the business. The hospital approached the Dell EMC Converged Platforms & Solutions team for a better way forward, and conducted a joint analysis to identify areas for improvement.
Bumrungrad International Hospital partnered with Dell EMC to deliver a modern healthcare platform that would lay the foundations for a digital future, simplify administration and enable the hospital to move towards coordinated, personalized care with an increased focus on prevention and wellness. The hospital selected to implement Dell EMC converged infrastructure based on Dell EMC VxBlock, Dell EMC Isilon, Dell EMC XtremIO storage and Dell EMC Unity.
Bumrungrad International Hospital runs its critical applications on the converged platform, with data now centralized and highly available to clinicians, doctors, patients, and decision makers.
Dickon Smart-Gill, Corporate Chief Information Officer, Bumrungrad International Hospital
Bumrungrad International Hospital is using technology to ensure its clinicians and doctors remain connected to patients and the broader healthcare ecosystems, to ensure access to medical data at any point during the treatment cycle.
The hospital now has a single platform in place to enable collaboration between clinicians and doctors to manage, measure, and understand a growing range of medical tests that make the hospital safer, faster, and more robust.
Bumrungrad International Hospital is now in control of its management and delivery of real-time healthcare data. Improved efficiencies, high availability, and speed of access is moving the hospital closer to its goal of being known as the safest and most compassionate hospital globally.
