Today, some organizations use a form of VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP) to back up business-critical virtual machines. However, with this method, you have to stop a VM in order to determine the delta between VM snapshots or move the data off the VMware Solution Exchange (VSX), a component of VMware Marketplace. That’s the only way to get an accurate picture of the data currently on the VM disk. You also need to track and then merge the changes that occur while a backup or data move is in progress. For most businesses, disrupting VMs is unacceptable, even if it is inevitable.
Brian Reynolds, Sr. Product Manager for PowerProtect Data Manager at Dell Technologies, explains how we partnered with VMware to create Transparent Snapshots, a new feature available with Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager. With Transparent Snapshots, you no longer need to pause the VM to determine the delta between snapshots. Rather than using data movers to transition data off VSX, we use an embedded plug-in that works without any impact on the VMware ESXi hypervisor host or the VM. Backups with Transparent Snapshots are five times faster than with VADP. We’re continuing to work with VMware to also enable fast recoveries with practically no impact on VSX and the ESXi host.
