Dell and Goodwill Expand Their Free Recycling Partnership to Seven More States

Following on the heels of our announcement that Dell will not export electronic waste to developing countries, and operating under the assumption that recycling your old computer should be as easy as purchasing a new one, we are proud to announce another expansion our ReConnect Program to seven additional states – Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and West Virginia. The program is also expanding in Wisconsin to the Southeastern and South Central parts of the state. This brings the number of states participating in the program to 18, plus the District of Colombia, and the number of Goodwill stores participating in Reconnect to more than 1,400 nationwide.

Our customers and recent studies say recycling of electronics needs to be simple to be truly effective, and the ReConnect Partnership has proven to be a huge step in that direction. Participating stores not only accept any used computer equipment in any condition, but also from any electronic manufacturer, not just Dell.

According to Jim Gibbons, president and CEO for Goodwill Industries International, the ReConnect Partnership has already helped recycle and divert more than 50 million pounds of electronic equipment from the landfills, and that number should grow considerably with each new store that is added to the program. This expansion has the added benefit of creating green jobs at the participating stores. Goodwill, long focused on creating job opportunities for individuals with disabilities or others having a hard time finding employment, plans to hire additional staff to oversee the expanded recycling program – welcome news in today’s economic climate.

For those of you living in areas where the ReConnect Partnership is not yet available, Dell offers a variety of recycling options, from free takeback to donation to asset recovery services. These recycling options are available for consumers, small and medium businesses, large enterprises and governments worldwide, and helped us beat our goal to recycle 275 million pounds of equipment ahead of schedule.

Of course there’s always room for improvement. To this end, we invite you to submit your ideas to help us make our recycling program even better. Let us know in the comments section of this blog, or through IdeaStorm.
