Every Power User Should Be Mobile

The following is a guest post from Olivier Favre at Teradici. Earlier this year, Teradici announced cross-platform support for it's PCoIP® Workstation Access Software on Dell's portfolio of Precision workstations allowing small and medium businesses with little IT support to run complex CAD applications from anywhere.

Mobility and flexible work schedules are rapidly becoming a workplace norm, particularly among knowledge workers. This type of worker has grown accustomed to the flexibility of working from everywhere at anytime and, according to Dell’s 2014 Evolving Workplace Trends Study, workers are now just as productive at home or a local café as they are at their office. To accommodate this new corporate landscape, organizations across a variety of industries have embraced BYOD and mobility to give their staff greater flexibility across devices and geography.

Yet, one distinct group has been traditionally excluded from participating in this new era of mobility. Power users including designers, architects and visual artists typically work with large datasets that require a specialized portfolio of graphics intensive applications running on workstation grade machines. Mobile devices and laptops have been rendered unsuitable for the job, and the amount of data to be uploaded/downloaded each time have kept power users chained to their desks as a result.

But what if workstation-grade applications and the required data could be made available to power users from any location? Imagine the convenience, collaboration and greater productivity that could come from centrally hosted workspaces and data being accessed and edited from anywhere, on a variety of devices. What if IT managers could enable mobility across organizations large and small, and could offer instant remote access to performance workstations – whether they are desk side or in the data center?

To deliver on this vision for power users, Teradici and Dell teamed up to introduce Teradici PCoIP® Workstation Access Software for Dell Precision workstations in August last year. The solution was only available for desk side deployments at the initial release. Now it also supports data center use cases – including virtualized workstations, direct connect and brokered architecture – so IT managers can deliver high quality remote access to workstations, while improving scalability and management of computing resources.

Benefits of PCoIP Workstation Access Software include:

  • Outstanding user experience: Powered by PCoIP technology, users experience high frames per second and responsiveness regardless of location or network conditions.
  • Increased productivity: Broad device support including Teradici PCoIP Software Clients (Mac, Windows), Teradici PCoIP Mobile Clients (iPads and Android tablets) and ultra-secure PCoIP Zero Clients enable users to work more efficiently from any location.
  • Intrinsic Security: PCoIP Technology only transmits encoded pixels; data never leaves the premises.
  • Lower total cost of ownership: Organizations can deploy the solution with limited budgets and can also maximize the use of ISV applications across their workforce by centralizing their workstations in the datacenter.
  • Easy to deploy and manage: The solution can be deployed using existing tools without impacting the current infrastructure.

Teradici has a rich history in enabling remote access to heavy duty 3D applications, and motion picture studios like Industrial Light & Magic (IL&M), have used the company’s PCoIP technology to consolidate workstations, file servers, render farms and storage arrays in the datacenter. With Teradici’s PCoIP Remote Workstation solution, IL&M has the ability to maintain control of creative assets, without restricting artists’ work. Users simply connect remotely to their workstation from anywhere to work and collaborate with distributed teams more efficiently. Since the technology compresses, encodes and delivers the entire workstation experience from the datacenter to the end user in pixels, it is impossible for intellectual property and creative assets to be downloaded and potentially leaked.

This is just one example of how PCoIP technology is enabling greater mobility for power users. How will your organization mobilize its power user talent and increase productivity?
