Earlier this week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new, public commitments by several of the newest partners of the Climate Leaders program, including Dell. Dell joined the program as a Partner earlier this year, and we wanted to share our Climate Leaders goal at the same time the EPA issues a news release.
Dell’s Climate Leaders goal includes a commitment to reduce our global operations-based carbon intensity by 15 percent by 2012, as well as a pledge to be carbon neutral each year from 2008 through 2012. You’ll remember we announced this commitment earlier this year and proposed that carbon intensity-a measurement showing a company’s emissions relative to revenues – provided the best way to compare company climate and emissions goals. Our reduction strategy includes further improvements in our on-site energy usage and increased purchases of green power. Remaining carbon-equivalent emissions from electricity use, on-site fuel combustion and other minor sources will be offset. Today Dell’s carbon intensity is the lowest in our industry, and we’re committing to reduce it even further.
The carbon intensity goals are one part of Dell’s broad climate strategy which also includes:
- efforts to require supplier emissions reporting as part of a long term reduction effort, including our new partnership with the Carbon Disclosure Project announced last week, and
- development of products that deliver the most performance per watt, helping our customers save money, energy and carbon impacts.
