Remote Working: The Real-Life Test

The last couple of months has seen a dramatic change in our ways of working. Digital workspaces and remote working tools have gone from being used by 5-10% of employees, to being an everyday reality for the entire workforce. Security risk has increased, with employees working from numerous locations, with varying levels of network security. Yet, IT teams across the country have risen to the challenge.

As the initial rush subsides, and businesses begin plans to reopen offices in the UAE (with minimal staff for the foreseeable future), organizations have an opportunity to reflect on this period. What worked? What needs improving? How can this unprecedented experience be used as a real-life case study to improve the solutions and processes you have in place?

Communicate with your employees

As the end users, your employees can give insightful feedback on what worked during their time working remotely. Buy-in is essential to ensure you have the right solutions and processes in place to push your digital transformation journey to the next level and to further enable remote working.

  • Ask employees what they found helpful and challenging on an individual level. Having an open line of communication will help to generate honest and valuable feedback.
  • Reach out to various departments to understand the specific tools and applications that worked and what challenges were encountered with those that didn’t.
  • Consider common themes within the feedback and set up training to give employees confidence when using tools and applications remotely.

Consider security

When employees working remotely, security becomes even more of a challenge. A lack of control and training can lead to huge financial and legal implications in the case of a breach, so this should be carefully considered to mitigate risk.

  • Look at each of the tools you already use. Which have security solutions already built in and which required additional input?
  • Look at how you monitor devices and network use and whether this can be made more effective. AI and Machine Learning can be incredibly valuable when it comes to finding and blocking breaches, are you making use of these successfully?
  • Are your employees aware of the security protocols they should be following when working remotely? Set up a training to mitigate risk from end users using tools incorrectly.
