The birth of Atlas

DELL EMC IT began this digital transformation by deploying an internal hybrid cloud that we call Atlas, in October 2015. To effectively execute Atlas we took a look at our business choices, our technology, required processes and changes, as well as any staff realignments.

After building our internal cloud, we also needed to extend our computing capabilities to include off-premises cloud infrastructure to provide the flexible data center capacity that would allow us to rapidly scale. We found DELL EMC’s Enterprise Hybrid Cloud solution and converged architecture met our hybrid cloud needs.

Furthermore, as IT organizations like us, look to hyper-converged infrastructure appliances (HCIAs) to simplify and improve operational efficiency, the need for a wider range of cost effective, scaleable capabilities becomes more essential. So you can imagine our delight when DELL EMC announced that it was expanding its integrated data protection offerings and optimizing VMware workloads! These new changes mean that DELL EMC IT will now receive continuous data protection and backup of our mission-crtitical applications, and be able to receive any point in time recovery via a highly resilient, no-single-point-of-failure architecture.

It’s these types of updates and commitments to customers that make DELL EMC a business partner, and not just a service provider. And our decision to deploy Hybrid Cloud was an opportunity for us to transform and create a more modern and automated self-service IT environment together. We also understood that the journey to the Cloud does not end here; and we are equally responsible for simplifying, innovating and accelerating our own digital business initiatives.

Developing a Hybrid Cloud Strategy

Once the basic infrastructure was in place, we needed to strategize how we would take advantage of the new Hybrid Cloud capabilities and maximize outcomes. Essentially this came down to choice and flexibility – we wanted to put our applications where it made sense, whether that was in the private or public cloud. For example we choose to run Salesforce which is a SaaS application in the public cloud because it’s native, but traditional applications like SAP are a 100% virtualized and perform better if they remained in our private cloud as we could make use of our internal infrastructure.

New, next-gen mobile applications were then placed in our private hosted cloud because they are fundamentally different in the sense that they are born in the cloud and are inherent to it. This gives us new and exciting opportunities to further develop third platform applications in a fundamentally different way.

To date, the benefits of deploying Hybrid Cloud have allowed us to not only keep up to date with the changes of competing service providers, but have also made DELL EMC IT one of the leaders in the field. We are able to drive down the unit costs by changing the consumption process through automation, which also boosts agility. This flexibility allows us, and our customers, to meet demands and continue to innovate with profitability.

DELL EMC IT has been thrilled with the performance of Atlas and its ability to provide agile, on-demand infrastructure (IaaS) to our IT users over the passed year.
