Young Graduates Compete & Win Top Prizes For Innovative Apps

In the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt: “we cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Equipping young minds with the skills and vision to lead our world into the next era has always been an important priority for DELL EMC, which is why we invest, nurture and inspire young talent in the field of IT transformation.

DELL EMC held their annual competition for senior undergraduates in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey region to foster new ideas in the areas of Cloud computing, Big Data and IT Security.

With 6o entries from over 200 students, the competition was bound to be a tough one! Experienced international judges from a variety of different fields, blind-reviewed each project and shortlisted a total of 19. These exceptional teams stood out from the rest with outstanding submissions and impressive reports and although the final decision was well debated, ultimately a winner had to be named.

The winning team won for their innovative idea on developing a travel app called ‘Tourpedia’. Tourpedia was designed to fulfill a gap in the market for elderly/handicapped tourists who seek to travel more independently as well as regular tourists who are looking to enhance their time and vacation experience. The project included integration with Google glass and various API’s, including maps, Imgur image recognition, Cloudsight, Google places and Jsoup.

The end result was user-friendly and promotes a more enjoyable and informative travel experience for everyone, including the visually impaired who benefit from Tourpedia’s voice-over capabilities.

Tourpedia was an exceptional project with well-executed details by the students of King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. Their hard work, insight and vision secured them the winning prize of $5000.

Second and third place winners were equally as impressive, with the team from Helwan University in Egypt presenting “Precision Agriculture and Big Data” aimed at improving the success of farming by utilizing historical data more effectively, and the students from King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia using “crowd-sourced data for disaster management”.

Congratulations to all the students and supervisors who participated – we cannot wait for you to join the workforce and continue the journey of IT transformation into the future.
